Katt "The Cat" Williams, yes, the funny man who was once unanimously touted the face of Black American Comedy. To join the likes of Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock and a few others in the room of legends who have been to the Apollo Theater and have been immortalized for bringing laughs to black people, and chuckles to their white counterparts.
Coming off strong as a "Pimp" who delivers very obscure jokes with a foul mouth, He released Pimp Chronicles 1 and 2 to applause and almost critical acclaim. Critical acclaim, to me anyways and it had comedy clubs and comedy lovers like myself nodding, welcoming a new King into the world of comedy.
But what happened? In 2006, he took a rain check from comedy but not the media, releasing American Hustle, a movie which ushered him into the mainstream. After a four year break from comedy, which surprisingly was not a break from the media, being involved in various misdemeanours, altercations and becoming a Conspiracy Theorist favorite with his incessant discussion about their existence and how he was an "insider."
It isn't difficult to figure out why half of the industry distanced themselves from a "seemingly" crazy comedian trying to bash the industry he rose from. In 2012, he announced his Comedy special “Kattpacalypse " which got us all giddy and excited, waiting for the return of the King. It happened, and well... it wasn't as expected, he replaced the obscure jokes which he is so well known for with more bad and foul language and so marked his real turn in the industry.
Nobody called him the King anymore, slowly and efficiently replaced by the Black Community's current staple boy Kevin Hart. I mean, I have no problem with Kevin, his jokes can be a little more intelligent and less drawn out, but the problem is how Katt can have this amount of expectation resting on his should and not live up to it? Wasted potential.
And so when we walk through the museum of Black People Entertainment, we can see a little hall with Katt and his achievements in it, and we all sigh, knowing that it could have easily been a long row and a possible reference for inspiring the new generation.
But not to worry, the story is not over. A couple more court cases, custody battles and he still has not regained back his former self. But the Katt loyalists still wait, patiently, for their King to rise again. And I hope he does.
